I'm enjoying my Apollo 8P

But it's not new. I love the capability and integration it offers. I purchased this interface used from the estate of a friend who passed away. I loved it right away. Unfortunately, it only worked for a short time. Some of the circuitry failed and it was very expensive to repair. With a new circuit board it now registers as a new interface.

Even though I had an expensive repair, I think this is a great interface and it's really streamlined my home studio work with composing, arranging, and light recording.

GREAT AD/DA and UNISON PRES! 2nd unit I love it but hope for some software improvements

Got my 2nd Unit for studio expansion and for live rig. This one is taken out of studio and used for live. The uad plugs are so awesome and amazing how it elevates the live sound too by using la-2a's 1176's, pultecs , ssl etc ... mainly software issues I noticed only 3 things it could improve on and hopefully fixed in upcoming software updates!

1) fadermeters within console display latency when scrolling left to right (visual meters get stuck for a moment then resume)// not a computer issue as I'm running 3.7ghz 32GB ram 6core mac- issue seems like bad bad console buffering (even though settings are set correctly in uad settings)
2) a single channel can get uad overloaded if using heavy plugins = can't always use the ones you really want in succession slots 1-4 without uad overload clicking/noise
3) there's no visual difference between owned plugs and not owned ones (when selecting) which makes it difficult for someone who doesn't know your owned plugins to select plugs on the fly. Can be a little frustrating.

Hardware is 5 stars for sure// software could improve! However wonderful sound and unit

Really solid.

I really dig it. The unison pres are great. The conversion is great. The software is easy to use and once I got used to it, I don’t find it bothersome to use. The plug ins we all know are great.

My only wish list
Would have been a solid 16 analog outs instead of smux. I would like to see more esoteric pre amp emulations some chandler , etc. and please make a sta level compressor ;)

Apollo 8p

A great piece of kit.
overpriced, should be bundled with an Octo Satellite so you have a chance of using your plugins,
Bundled Quad is not a good starting point.

Great quality but...

wonderful and great quality! however it has little power to keep more than 4 plugins running together, the processor is weak, by the value expected much more.

Sounds great but needs more DSP & a longer-than-20-days discount deal.

It's a good sounding unit, no faults there. Unison is a nice feature that speeds up workflow and frees up DSP, but more DSP out of the box would be ideal, if not necessary. at 44.1 and 48k, I don't even max out my DSP usage before I have sessions crash, which I can't help but think is due to Ableton and the Apollo trying to communicate with each other fast enough and failing. Can't imagine having to work at higher sample rates with this unit and trying to utilize UAD plugins. The plugins that come with the unit seem to run fairly well, but anything remotely taxing is immediately noticed. Using a high quality channel strip like the API Vision or the API 2500 Bus Compressor in a single instance immediately slows everything down. It's concerning, to say the least, for bigger sessions. I'm currently waiting for a free satellite that was part of a promotion so I hope this fixes my DSP issues for a while and is a good move on UA's part.

All of the demo trials for plugins are awesome, and they really do sound incredible. I wish the initial 20 day period bundle discounts were longer, 20 days is hardly long enough to know what plugins I'd like to buy off the bat. That first bundle deal should be a lifetime offer when you buy the Apollo, available to cash it at any point, not rush into buying things in just over 2 weeks of using them.

Otherwise a quality, reliable unit with some great software out of the box and even better software to upgrade to. Glad I've started investing in the UA ecosystem!

Minus 2 Stars For Weak DSP Chips

The Apollo 8p is a great sounding audio interface with a very well thought-out accompanying software package. It also looks great and feels very sturdy. Unfortunately, its weak point is that you hit the DSP limit rather quickly while tracking at higher sample rates as the plugins take up more DSP resources. Having said that, i revisited some older mixes I had done prior to obtaining the apollo and sprinkled them with some uad-2 plugins and immediately noted that they made the songs sound noticeably better and at the end of the day, there's no price tag on the satisfaction of a great sounding mix. This recommendation comes with an asterisk so do your research and be warned about the dsp usage.

Big Moves

I recently started researching the UA technology after I saw some clients came to my studio and was using the plugins. I was sold out totally on the sound one was able to achieve on the way going in to the DAW. So I went out and bought the 8p, so far so good!!

2 ème live avec mon apollo

WoW,

Bat, orgue Hamond, folk, voix.

Great Hardware! Console Software still needs improvement

I already had an Apollo Twin from its early batches. I wasn't happy mainly with its HiZ input when using Unison Gtr Plugins such as Marshall JMP 2203, it didn't sound quite right to me. With Apollo 8P, now it sounds as UA advertises. I noticed an overall sound improvement over its preamps as well, so it is a lot more than just an Apollo Twin "bigger" brother, so you know.
I bought A8p to use on live purposes, as a latency free monitoring system running Unison plugins along with Logic Pro and Ableton Live.
Now UA really needs to improve its CONSOLE software a lot more for that type of task, such as MIDI controlling/automation and preset handling. The labeling on Console should follow a Session Preset, as well as CUE and Aux positions... I mean, there is a lot to be done on that regard. The way that the mirroring actually does not replicate the chosen port, is kind of frustrating, but it works just as a hardware should behave, so that's fine... That's rock solid. If you UA guys ever need some extra ideas, let me know!!! :-)

Big step up

I just started my first project with the Apollo 8P. My workflow speed has increased significantly with this interface and the associated plug ins that came with it. It took me a long time to save for it but it's felt well worth it. I'm only a couple of weeks in but the new-gear honeymoon might last awhile longer with this thing.

Love it top to bottom, but need better routing

I love it. I already owned a few of the emulation plugs and can a/b them with the UAD version. The SSl channel has much more depth, and the Comp is now usable. The box is great.: the sound of the pres, conversion (both ways), the hardware (switches, metering), the software (no driver issues).

The only issue is the lack of routing, specifically ear cues. My previous box (an RME unit) allowed one to send any ins to any outs. I (ignorantly) assumed a new technology like the UAD would by default include such a feature. Discovering a 4- cue max was quite a shock, almost enough to return the unit. I track larger bands, and not being able to have dedicated mixes for each player is a big problem.

Tried Others, Love The Apollo 8p

I used the silver face version Apollo a few years ago and loved it. Haven't had many "wow" experiences that rivaled that - mostly because I was upgrading from a Digi 002. A huge leap and sonic upgrade. Alas, I didn't stick with it because I came to realize the hidden costs of UAD DSP. In my next round of upgrades I decided to try the Antelope Orion Studio. A great machine, tons of I/O and crystal clear conversion, but man does that console app suck. Workflow killer. The digital menu was a subtle pain too. I returned it and went for the Apollo 8p. I couldn't be happier. I'm making more music. The console app is an A+, everything has a manual knob, and I've learned to limit my DSP expectations. It's a tease b/c UAD plugs are hands down best!

Unique, Hi Quality Solution for Music Production

A UAD interface is and should be the very first investment for anyone who is serious about doing music and/or audio professionally.
The quality of the hardware and software are unparalleled and remains unmatched till date. As someone who has used Neve 99RS, Euphonix System 5 and many other desks in the past, I find the quality of Apollo interfaces to be simply stellar.

My only 'complaint' so to speak is that I somehow imagined, expected getting more plugins for a quad processor.
